My Pilgrim Story
2022-2023
My pilgrim story started in the city of Porto in Portugal at the cathedral that overlooked the city. It was very early in the morning and the usually bustling city was dark and quiet and I stood alone unsure what I was getting myself into. I had my backpack on, my pilgrim passport packed, and my litre water bottle full. It was Camino time.

I started to walk in the direction that the first arrow was pointing, when I saw a girl of about my age through the darkness. With her large hiking pack on, she definitely fitted the description of a pilgrim. She was tall and tanned and her brown hair was tied up loosely in a bun. I called out to her and introduced myself. Her name was Vendula and she was from Czech Republic.

‘Beyond the fence posts of the busy city, and far away from any mechanical hum, lies a veggie patch filled with tangly treats and dewy delights. Here is a place to feel content, to relax and unwind; to potter along with the plant people who bring smells of flowering courgettes & sinking toadstool cushions’

てんごく (Tengoku)
2021
My hand glides across the old desk, over markings, scribbles and smudges made over the years. It eventually comes to a mark which reads てんごく (Tengoku) written in red pen. What does that mean again? It’s been a while since I studied Japanese. I search for the word online and come across three meanings: heaven, kingdom of heaven and paradise. I wonder why I wrote it?

Months ago, I went to Hopkins Creek with my friends Callen, James and Michael. In a crater in the otherwise sparse Australian bushlands, the small music festival played host to thousands of people escaping their nine to five jobs for a weekend of blissful dancing. The wintery weather didn’t stop people from expressing themselves by wearing whatever they wanted. Everyone was smiling. Everyone danced. Everyone had a good time.

Rules of Fishing with Dad
2021
When fishing with my dad, there are a few rules to remember.

1. Toady = -1 fish. If you have the ill-fated fortune of catching a toady (toadfish), it is considered catching negative one fish. So, don’t bother boasting that you caught a fish at the end of the session, because you are actually worse off than when you arrived having caught no fish. This is because toadies are absolute pests that are sometimes harder to not catch than catch. They are also very hard to get off the hook as they often swallow it, not to mention that they are spikey and poisonous.
